Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra
Samsung’s Galaxy S series is one of the most popular smartphone lineups in the world. Since the release of the first Galaxy S phone in 2010, Samsung has consistently pushed the boundaries of technology and design, offering consumers cutting-edge features and sleek aesthetics.
Each year, Samsung unveils a new iteration of the Galaxy S, introducing upgrades and innovations that keep pace with the latest trends in the smartphone industry. Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra are two recent editions of the S series.
Today, I will write about an in-depth comparison of these two handsets through this post.
Galaxy S22 Ultra vs Galaxy S23 Ultra: Design
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S23 Ultra are pretty much the same design. For the first time, Samsung uses an identical design pattern for two consecutive S series phones.
However, there are some slight differences between the two. The S23 Ultra is slightly larger than its predecessor, with a less severe curve and a flattened design that makes it easier to grip. The screen of the S23 Ultra is also optimized for the S Pen, making it more user-friendly.
Samsung has introduced new color options for the S23 Ultra, including Phantom Black, Cream, Green, and Lavender. In contrast, the S22 Ultra is available in Phantom Black, Phantom White, Burgundy, and Green.
The camera array of the S23 Ultra is also more extensive than that of the S22 Ultra due to including the mega 200MP signature camera feature in the former.
Key Notes about Design
- The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S23 Ultra share a similar outward appearance.
- The camera array of the Galaxy S23 Ultra is more extensive than that of the S22 Ultra.

Galaxy S22 Ultra vs Galaxy S23 Ultra: Camera
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has significant camera upgrades compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The most notable upgrade is the 200MP sensor, which provides better-detailed images.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with adaptive pixel sensors technology. With its adaptive pixel sensor, the S23 Ultra can combine 16 pixels into a larger pixel, producing brighter, more detailed, low-light photos.
Moreover, the new Night portrait mode and AI promise better portraits overall, despite the reduction in front camera resolution from 40MP in the S22 Ultra to 12MP in the S23 Ultra.
Regarding Samsung’s signature telephoto camera, S23 Ultra features dual 10MP telephoto cameras with 3x and 10x optical zoom, 30x digital zoom, and 100x Space Zoom. The Nightography feature has also been improved with better noise reduction, details, and color tones. Additionally, the S23 Ultra allows for 8K video recording at 30fps and double the optical image stabilizer angles for steadier footage.
Key Notes about Camera
- Galaxy S23 Ultra has an upgraded camera with a 200MP primary camera.
- Camera features ( Nightography, Telephoto, SpaceZoom ) are improved in S23.
- S22 has a better selfie camera resolution of 40MP.
Galaxy S22 Ultra vs Galaxy S23 Ultra: Display
Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S22 Ultra share a similar category of high-end display. Both flagships contain a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with QuadHD+ resolution. The phones hold a refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120Hz, with a maximum brightness of 1,750 nits.
Regarding brightness, Galaxy S23 Ultra’s screen reached a maximum brightness (1,225 nits) less than the S22 Ultra (1359 nits). Yet, both displays remain bright enough to be viewed in direct sunlight.
The S23 Ultra boasts an improved comfort feature that enables users to modify color tones and contrast levels, reducing eye strain when using the screen at night. Additionally, the Vision Booster function now adjusts at three different lighting levels instead of two, which helps minimize glare in daylight.
Key Notes about Display
- Both phones hold a similar category of display.
- The maximum brightness is slightly better in S22.
- S23 adds an upgraded Vision Booster to minimize glare.
Galaxy S22 Ultra vs Galaxy S23 Ultra: Performance
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra boasts a unique feature among Samsung phones: the exclusive Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile chipset. This is a specialized version of the 8 Gen 2 processor, made only for the Galaxy. A higher clock speed than the other chipset version makes it unique.
Moreover, it holds the fastest graphics performance currently available on the phone. According to Samsung, the graphics performance is 40% faster than the Galaxy S22 Ultra, while the AI performance is also enhanced by 40%.
Galaxy S23 Ultra has a larger vapor cooling chamber, ensuring better-sustained performance.
On the other hand, the Galaxy S22 Ultra remains a powerful phone, featuring a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip with options of 8GB or 12GB of RAM. It also performs better with these components but not as fast as the S23 Ultra.
